Eventually, Becker and Fagen began composing songs together, hoping to become professional songwriters in the tradition of the Brill Building. The duo played in a number of groups - including the Bad Rock Group, which featured future comedic actor Chevy Chase on drums - which ranged from jazz to progressive rock. The two met at Bard College in New York in 1967 and began playing in bands together shortly afterward. Walter Becker (bass) and Donald Fagen (vocals, keyboards) were the core members of Steely Dan throughout its variety of incarnations. Even after the group disbanded in the early '80s, their records retained a cult following, as proven by the massive success of their unlikely return to the stage in the early '90s. Though the band didn't perform live between 19, Steely Dan's popularity continued to grow throughout the '70s, as their albums became critical favorites and their singles became staples of AOR and pop radio stations. With producer Gary Katz, Becker and Fagen gradually changed Steely Dan from a performing band to a studio project, hiring professional musicians to record their compositions. Steely Dan created a sophisticated, distinctive sound with accessible melodic hooks, complex harmonies and time signatures, and a devotion to the recording studio.

Becker and Fagen never truly enjoyed rock - with their ironic humor and cryptic lyrics, their eclectic body of work shows some debt to Bob Dylan - preferring jazz, traditional pop, blues, and R&B. As the vehicle for the songwriting of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, Steely Dan defied all rock & roll conventions.

Steely Dan never subscribed to that aesthetic. You can see me teach and play guitar on my You Tube Channel, follow this link or search for ‘Dan Bohane’ in You Tube.Biography Most rock & roll bands are a tightly wound unit that developed their music through years of playing in garages and clubs around their hometown. I encourage creativity and teach song writing and improvision in rhythm, fingerstyle and single note melody.

I have built up a large file of songs to learn at every level and can help students learn exactly what they wish. Some of my students don’t wish to learn this way and that’s totally fine. I am also proud that one of my school students has recently gained a grade 6 Distinction with the same exam board during Lockdown learning under difficult circumstances. I can teach Guitar in all styles and have a Rockschool Grade 8 in Electric guitar performance, a Guildhall Grade 8 in Classical Guitar and I’m proud to have gained a 90% Grade 8 Distinction in Acoustic guitar performance this year with the London College of music. It also encourages students out of their comfort zones and inevitably makes for better skills. I find this provides structure, clear goals, and uses high quality learning materials. I also work with Primary and Special Educational Needs students and so have developed a kind, emphatic style taking an interest in the needs and wellbeing of the individual student.īeginners learn in very small steps and when they are ready, I encourage all students to engage with an exam syllabus.
